Kitchen Update in Chevy Chase, Washington, DC
Project Overview
Over the years we had done many projects for this client including rebuilding her entire addition, installing built-ins and radiator covers throughout her home, and many other small projects along the way. Remodeling the kitchen had always been on her list; it just was not a high priority. When the time was right however, we were eager to get started with the design as we had been thinking about the project for a few years.
Design and Layout
The existing kitchen was poorly lit, the cabinets were dark and unattractive, with a large center island that added storage but blocked the flow. Our goal was to design a bright, open kitchen without losing storage space. We removed the center island, and installed large pantry cabinets on the back wall of the kitchen that previously had been bare. We gained yet more storage and counter space by extending the cabinetry (in an L-shape) into the large arched entrance to the kitchen. These cabinets are double-sided, with drawers accessible from both the kitchen side and the hall side. We replaced a bulky radiator with an electric toe-kick heater, and installed recessed and accent lighting throughout. There was one feature in the old kitchen that the homeowner loved and wanted to preserve. The large pass-through window between the kitchen and the sunroom was practical and provided a good view – both out into the sunroom when working in the kitchen, and into the kitchen when sitting in the sunroom. We enhanced this feature by bumping up the counter on the sunroom side, and installing a curved decorative panel (at the ceiling) that matched the cabinets and concealed the vent hood.
Style and Finishes
Throughout the years and ongoing updates, the homeowner has preserved the traditional look from when the house was built. We kept the kitchen design consistent, with white Shaker style cabinetry and granite countertops. In the interest of comfort, upkeep and durability, we installed a Marmoleum floor, but selected a subdued color that blends well with the rest of the finishes.
Construction and Final Product
The construction phase of the project went very well. Because many of our projects are in congested areas where parking and material storage is a constant struggle, it’s a luxury to work in a home with a large back yard in which to set up shop. The majority of the project was completed while the client was out of town, and when she returned and saw the finished kitchen; she was astonished (in a good way) by the transformation.
