Attic Bathroom Remodel in Chevy Chase, Washington, DC
Project Overview
We first met this client in 2007 when we fully remodeled their guest bathroom and attic, and installed a custom, solid core Mahogany entrance door for their stately home in Chevy Chase, DC. In 2013, they invited us back to remodel their master bathroom and convert the attic into a guest suite.
Design and Layout
For round two, we partnered with architect VW Fowlkes who was largely responsible for design. The goal of the project was to convert the attic into a fully equipped guest suite to include a three-piece bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. Being an attic, the layout was somewhat dictated by the roof framing, as ensuring adequate head room in all areas was a concern. The shower was positioned at the end of the space, using the peaked ceiling and existing skylight as points of interest. The kitchenette was installed at the top of the stairs, providing separation between the bathroom and bedroom, and the vanity sink held forward to include adequate headroom despite the sloped ceiling.
Style and Finishes
The goal was to specify finishes and fixtures that matched the classic design throughout the rest of the home. The cabinetry in the kitchen and bathroom was custom, with in-set doors and drawers, with matching white knobs for the pulls. Classic subway tile was used in the bathroom area, with a porcelain farm-style sink at the vanity. To add some interest, a glue-down cork floor was used throughout, with marine style lights at either side of the bathroom entrance.
Construction and Final Product
Working on the third floor is always challenging, simply due to the logistics of having to carry all materials up and down the steps. Bulky items like kitchen cabinetry are particularly challenging, and it was necessary to assemble some of the cabinets on site. Other than these challenges, the construction phase went off without a hitch. Our team finished on time and on budget, and the homeowner is thrilled with the final outcome.
