Kitchen Remodel and Expansion in Brookland, Washington, DC
Project Overview
Our clients sought out Four Brothers to renovate, open up, and enlarge their original galley kitchen in their single family home in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. The dining area was completely walled off from the prep area making each area feel tight. The clients wanted to remove two perpendicular load bearing walls to fully connect the kitchen and dining room. They dreamed of a large, warm wood butcher block island with seating and a style that would blend well with the classic features of their home.
Design and Layout
Since we were removing the full wall that backed into the dining room, we lost a space for tall cabinetry, the refrigerator, and a hood. The side wall had windows which we filled to create a new solid surface for all these tall kitchen elements. To recoup our lost light, we made the rear wall overlooking the back yard predominantly windows. The kitchen island houses a lot of function and storage including two extra freezer bins, a dual recycling and trash pull out, and an under counter microwave drawer. Additional kitchen storage is located under the seating area with discreet tip-on door latches which require no handles to open.
Style and Finishes
From the beginning, the clients knew they wanted a bright yellow stove and butcher block island top in their kitchen. To balance these warm tones, we selected a cool Stonedust gray for the cabinetry color. We paired these with light Caearstone quartz countertops, and for extra layers of texture — white subway tile, wood + steel shelving, painted ship lap, and rough-cut clad overhead beams. The clients completed the kitchen with industrial style lighting fixtures, wood + metal seating, and green succulents.
Construction and Final Product
When performing a remodeling project in an older home, the contractor often uncovers surprises that were not anticipated by the project architect. Four Brothers’ construction teams are prepared for these situations and well equipped to implement solutions. On this particular renovation however, everything went off without a hitch. The project was completed on time and on budget. The final product was a far more efficient first floor plan that included an award-winning kitchen!
