Condo Remodel in Foggy Bottom, Washington, DC
Project Overview
Located in the historic Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC, our clients selected this downtown condo for its incredible view of the city, including Georgetown and the Potomac River waterfront. They selected Four Brothers to frame this view and carry it throughout the rest of their home. The existing condominium unit was in excellent shape, but wasn’t a perfect fit for our client’s wants and lifestyle. Both currently professors, it was important they each have a comfortable office space to work from when home. Additionally, the master bathroom, 3/4 bathroom, and powder rooms would all require substantial updates in terms of aesthetic, layout, and accessibility.
Design and Layout
Our clients want this to be their home for the long run, so designing a space that will grow with them and remain accessible was a priority. Though not an immediate need, we wanted to ensure something the size of a wheelchair could move mostly unrestricted throughout the home. To accomplish this we added wider walkways, and increased the size of door openings wherever possible. We also eliminated unnecessary changes in floor elevation, a perfect example being the use of curbless shower pan systems in both bathrooms, eliminating this common hazard. Cognizant of the potential need for safety and assistive devices in the future, additional blocking was added in walls surrounding the showers, bathtub, and similar areas where items such a bench or handrail might be installed.
Beyond accessibility, various improvements were made to increase the home’s comfort, including acoustical insulation for soundproofing, and energy-efficient window replacements. Carpet was also added throughout the unit with a high-density foam underlayment for added support.
Style and Finish
Our clients desired a bright, monotone aesthetic that would showcase their marvelous collection of contemporary paintings and sculpture. Each office includes custom wall cabinetry and a wrap-around desk solution with modern waterfall end details by Neff. The spacious desktop provides excellent cable management to eliminate wires and seamlessly integrate with the homeowner’s technology. Surprisingly, both offices also feature a vertically mounted track with adjustable carabiners that can be repositioned for various resistance training and functional strength exercises. The end result is a multi-functional workspace that is practically stunning and stunningly practical.
