Kitchen Renovation in Tenleytown, Washington, DC
Project Overview
Located in Northwest Washington DC’s historic Tenleytown neighborhood, the owners of this home approached Four Brothers to transform the kitchen in their traditional center hall colonial. Being a young family, they needed a space that would be conducive not just to typical kitchen activities, but extracurriculars for their children, such as homework. Additionally, it was important to them that the new kitchen still incorporate the home’s original feel and aesthetic.
Design and Layout
Consulting with our in-house team or architects and designers, it was determined that a traditional open-concept kitchen would best fit the client’s wants and lifestyle. The existing kitchen had been renovated 20-years prior and when starting the construction phase it quickly became apparent that structural changes made at that time were of poor quality and would need to corrected. We fully gutted the kitchen down bare studs and added appropriate blocking and reinforcement where needed. We also enlarged the existing opening between the kitchen and adjacent dining room.
Style and Finish
The new kitchen revolves around a large center island with plenty of flexible seating, perfect for busy morning breakfast. The island features a cherry wood butcher block top, bringing an overall feeling of warmth the space. The island and countertop cabinets are by Elmwood in saturated blue, and the white marble wrap-around countertop is by Caesarstone in Calacatta Nuvo. The wall cabinets are also by Elmwood in Arctic White, and offer just the right amount of contrast to stand out against the full-height marble backsplash by Waterworks. Finally, to really set things off, we used a number of black accents, including: a faucet and wall-mounted pot-filler by Brizo, cabinet hardware by Top Knobs, and retro-inspired ceiling light fixtures by Restoration Hardware.
