Contemporary Home Remodel in Chevy Chase, Maryland
Project Overview
Our clients sought out Four Brothers to design and build an addition that included a new family room, screened-in porch, and a reconfigured kitchen, butler’s pantry, and powder room on the first floor. They had outgrown the previous kitchen and wanted a living space more closely connected to the kitchen, as they have two young children. Four Brothers also designed a new master suite on the second floor of this addition, including a new full bath and walk-in closet.
Design + Layout
The clients wanted to respect the character of the original 1923 house, but update it with contemporary elements that reflect their comfortable style mixed with some mid-century modern aesthetic preferences. They receive great natural light from the backyard, so we used that to our advantage throughout the new spaces, keeping a lot of the new components light with a few darker elements throughout.
Style + Finishes
The kitchen cabinets are a painted finish with a slightly traditional, yet contemporary door style as a nod to the age of the original house. Virginia Mist granite in a leathered finish was used for the perimeter counters and quartz with subtle veining was used for the island counters. The same granite was used in the butler’s pantry for consistency. Strategically placed glass front cabinets in the butler’s pantry allow the clients to display their key pieces.
The powder bath includes Grecian White marble mosaic floors with a bold dragon print wallpaper as a nod to the clients’ past travels.
In the family room, the fireplace mantle (both interior and exterior) came from a salvaged slab of an Ash tree the clients removed from their rear yard prior to the start of the project. Four Brothers kept the live edge for the screened-porch while the interior mantle was brought to a smoother finish. Shiplap ceiling and false beams flank the new skylights over this space. Four Brothers kept a portion of the original exterior brick wall exposed and added a fresh coat of paint.
The master bathroom features a walnut vanity with quartz counters, white marble wall tile, and porcelain field tile in a herringbone pattern on the floor and in the shower. These materials complement the brass fixtures and hardware.
Throughout the home, new white oak wood floors were used, stained to match the existing floors on the main level.
The exterior first floor is painted stucco (to complement the original brick at that level); the second floor addition is clad in vertical siding. A black metal roof was installed over the first floor addition with architectural asphalt shingles on the second floor. New black windows and doors (with white interiors) were installed on the rear of the house.
