Modern Roof Deck Addition in Capitol Hill, Washington, DC
Project Overview
This c.1910 home in Capitol Hill underwent a transformative renovation to maximize its potential. Private outdoor space was scarce in the area, prompting the clients to reimagine the underutilized third floor. The clients had a well-defined program including a kitchenette, an outdoor integrated grill and cabinets, a full bathroom, and a desire for ample outdoor space. The challenge lay in creating a cohesive third floor that seamlessly blended interior and exterior elements. This involved reframing and lowering the rear roof while ensuring comfortable circulation and avoiding a bland stack of elements. The interior space also doubled as a guest suite, featuring a concealed two-panel door for quick access to a ready sleeping space with an ensuite bathroom. Natural light flooded the interior through Marvin windows, a glass door along the back of the house, and walkable skylights. The renovated home now offers stunning views of the Washington Monument, the Library of Congress, and surrounding architectural features. The chosen materials included Thunder White granite counters, Naturekast and Cabico cabinets, Wormy maple accents, Havanna Gold decking from Trex, unfinished Sapele wood, stacked stone from Norstone, and custom fabricated galvanized steel poles.
