Kitchen + Master Bathroom Remodel in Capitol Hill, Washington, DC
Project Overview
This charming row house in DC’s Eastern Market neighborhood was purchased by a newlywed couple and they approached us with a vision for renovating their new home. These first-time-homebuyers snagged an excellent location, just blocks away from Eastern Market, but the layout and finish of their new home needed some work. The existing kitchen was small and tucked away at the back, and the existing main bedroom was very large, though it did not feature an en-suite closet or bathroom.
Design + Layout
To create a larger kitchen with room for an island, our clients wanted to move the kitchen into the second living room. In order to make everything fit, we needed to demolish and patch up some existing fireplaces which, while functional, were no longer useful. This left a bump from the existing masonry: In the kitchen, we turned that bump into a focal point, placing the range and hood centered on that wall, ensuring the appliances would be visible from the dining room.
Upstairs in the main suite, we reconfigured the room to fit a bathroom and closet, while leaving plenty of square footage for the bedroom itself. Prior to our building the en-suite, the floorplan only contained one bathroom, making the addition imperative.
Style + Finishes
Downstairs in the kitchen, clean shaker cabinets in a soft mint green create a refined and unbothered look, while the brushed stainless steel of the hood vent and half-dome chandelier evoke an industrial setting. Wide Carrara marble countertops provide plenty of prep space and utility. Upstairs in the main suite, the saturated teal subway tile gives the shower an old-school feel, while the brass fixtures, custom built vanity cabinets, and hex floor tiles lean into a modern classic look.
