Elevated Bungalow in Del Ray, Alexandria, Virginia
Project Overview
Our clients chose to embark on this renovation project as their family grew, prompting a clear need for more space. They toyed with the idea of moving, but they had become fond of their neighborhood and community, and didn’t want to leave their excellent school district behind. As such, they called us in to remodel their house and build a new addition to expand the square footage. The existing exterior was showing its age both in wear and style, and internally, practical concerns about the longevity and functionality of their plumbing and electrical systems led the homeowners to opt for a complete remodel.
Design + Layout
Rather than just tacking another room or two on the back of the house, we made sure that the addition cleaved seamlessly with the existing construction. We opted for a two story expansion, with a walled-in porch. With that extra space, we were able to reconfigure much of the indoor room layout. Building a spacious galley kitchen on the lower level was a key design requirement, and upstairs, adding space for a renovated primary suite allowed us to shuffle upstairs rooms and frame in a spacious A-frame office.
Style + Finishes
The palette for this project leans heavily on fully saturated blues and greens, paired with bright whites in a variety of natural finishes, with stained wood grain accents. The kitchen highlights these finishes well: We paired rich teal custom cabinetry with marble and hand-glazed tile, with a muted hardwood floor. The abundance of natural light spreads easily into the rest of the lower level through the glass wall separating the kitchen from the living room. In the main bath, blue veined marble countertops and dark green shower tile carry the palette through. Outside, we matched the gray lap siding on the porch and addition to continue the lines in the charming bungalow architecture.
