Kitchen Renovation in Great Falls, VA
Project Overview
Our clients came to us with a clear vision for their home. They love open concept designs, and were hoping that we could modernize and open their kitchen and main bath, while touching some other smaller spaces, and adding some show-stopping flair throughout. We were able to design a few elements in the kitchen to stand out, such as the massive islands and wood paneled range enclosure. Although they wanted an open floor plan, they were hoping to avoid drop-down beams in the ceiling to keep a clean flat finish.
Design + Layout
In order to avoid visible beams in the kitchen, we installed a sturdy steel girder to support the second story. We were not able to completely avoid visible structural elements, however, due to the nature of the existing construction. We were able to turn that to our advantage though: The posts coming from the corners of the main kitchen island are at once structural, and, clad in rift-sawn oak, add an attractive color to the vertical sightline, mimicking the oak uprights on either side of the range. We designed a stylish and useful feature in the form of a separate appliance cabinet, with a hand glazed white finish and incorporated pot filler, perfect for tea and espresso in the morning.
Style + Finishes
For the kitchen, we stuck with a modern classic black white and gray color palette, with hardwood flooring and oak accents adding warm earth tones. We installed bespoke cabinets with thin shaker-style frames, a textured marble backsplash with soft gray grout lines, polished chrome plumbing fixtures, and subtly cheeky modern lamps and pendant lights. The striking marble countertops on the island were matched in the inverse with the dark gray granite on the perimeters.
