Kitchen Renovation in Bethesda, MD
Project Overview
Nestled in a Bethesda neighborhood, this kitchen remodeling project was commissioned by a family with young children. Their existing kitchen, while spacious, faced issues with failing cabinetry and inadequate storage. A large peninsula bisected the room, hampering both flow and prep space. Our clients desired a renovation that would address these issues, particularly focusing on enhancing storage and countertop space for meal preparation. A key element in the redesign was the sloped ceiling, which presented an opportunity to center the kitchen around a prominent island hood, flanked by faux beams that accentuated the room’s height.
Design + Layout
Our renovation aimed to create a functional space that could accommodate multiple people working simultaneously without hindrance. We ensured wide clearances around the new island, allowing easy circulation from adjacent living and dining areas into the kitchen. Because our client wanted to maximize storage space, we faced unique design challenges due to the high but sloping ceiling and the limited wall space, which significantly constrained cabinet positioning. By incorporating the cooktop and microwave into the island, we were able to preserve the existing windows while giving us greater flexibility with the upper cabinets.
Style + Finishes
The aesthetic vision for this kitchen transformation embraced a classic color palette of black, white, and Farrow and Ball’s Downpipe no.26. The ample natural light from the existing windows emphasizes the soft blue undertone of the cabinets and paneling, and highlights the bold contrast between the island and countertop marble. Black and nickel lighting fixtures, along with knurled nickel cabinet hardware add sophistication to an already classic color palette. Key stylistic choices that stood out in this project include the retention of the existing flooring, custom paneling in a variety of sizes, Caesarstone countertops, and beadboard detailing.
