Moody Kitchen Remodel in Bloomingdale, Washington, DC
Project Overview
Our clients, a pair of practicing attorneys in DC, came to us after buying a house in DC’s Bloomingdale neighborhood. They were eager to maintain the character of the original construction, but unfortunately, the kitchen had been quickly flipped before they moved in, leaving behind cheap finishes and a disjointed layout. We set out to reorganize the kitchen, install custom cabinets and high-quality appliances, and maximize their cooking and entertaining spaces while remaining true to the house’s original finishes.
Design + Layout
Our main structural concern centered around reorganizing the powder room to allow for a new double-door opening into the back yard. This cleared space from the kitchen straight through to the back, letting more natural light into the center of the first floor, and creating a comfortable flow for entertaining. The existing separate dining room was another casualty of our reorganization, but we made up for the edit by incorporating a large built-in banquette and bar into the newer, larger, kitchen. All of this helped create a seamless entertaining space from the banquette all the way to their existing enclosed back deck.
Style + Finishes
Our clients’ self stated “traditional-eclectic” aesthetic shines through in the finished product. To match their collection of mid-century and traditional furniture pieces and decorations, we selected a classic shaker cabinet from Elmwood in a custom color modeled after Benjamin Moore’s “Soot.” Black leathered soapstone countertops add a soft presence at waist height, and the aged brass hardware play up the vintage look. The mirrored bar adds depth to the space, echoing traditional bar architecture. The range hood was designed and built on site by one of our skilled carpenters.
