Coastal Kitchen Addition in Vinalhaven, Maine
Project Overview
Our clients, both attorneys based in Washington, DC, wanted to create a spacious kitchen addition in their summer home in Vinalhaven, Maine. Previously, we collaborated on a kitchen renovation in their DC home, and this project gave them a chance to enhance their coastal space with an emphasis on bringing the outdoors in. The new large kitchen and dining area feature vaulted ceilings, full-height windows, and natural materials.
Design + Layout
The kitchen addition is thoughtfully angled to maximize views of the nearby island, framing sightlines from the sink and prep areas. The clients’ vision was to create a spacious, light-filled environment, so most of the storage was kept within base cabinets and a large kitchen island, allowing for uninterrupted window space and a view that stretches from one end of the room to the other. The layout includes an open dining area that is perfectly symmetrical, with tall windows on each end, creating a sense of balance and connection to the surrounding coastal environment.
Style + Finishes
The final design combines traditional elements with a contemporary influence. Custom inset cabinetry in both white and white oak offers a crisp look while balancing the natural tones. Granite countertops and a tumbled Carrara marble backsplash complement the limestone floors and add subtle texture throughout the space. Vaulted ceilings and abundant windows bring a bright and airy feel, while natural finishes echo the rugged beauty of the Maine coast. The result is an inviting kitchen that reflects the clients’ desire for a retreat deeply connected to its surroundings.
