Contemporary Home Refresh in Alexandria, Virginia
Project Overview
Our client, a landscape architect, wanted to modernize his family’s 40-year-old home to make it more energy-efficient, functional, and address outdated builder-grade design elements. The project included relocating the kitchen to double its size, completely transforming the exterior, and upgrading systems throughout for improved sustainability.
Design + Layout
The existing structure lacked lateral bracing and relied heavily on windowed walls, posing structural challenges. We reinforced the rear wall by the kitchen, creatively integrating a large horizontal beam into the cabinetry design without sacrificing natural light. Window proportions were updated throughout, and relocating the kitchen created a more functional layout with ample space for cooking and entertaining.
Style + Finishes
The exterior features fiber-cement siding with mitered corners, a bronze metal roof, custom stained wood siding, and a custom metal railing at the new front porch. Inside, walnut cabinetry and wood accents tie the overall interior design together. The neutral palette of beige, bone, and bronze tones along with clean lines and simplicity, create a cohesive, timeless look throughout the home.
