A Charming Revival: Massachusetts Heights, Washington, DC Full Home Remodel

Project Overview

Nestled in the heart of Massachusetts Heights, this 100-year-old terracotta-roofed gem recently became home to a mother and her two young boys. The location is ideal, conveniently near the boys’ school and their mother’s workplace. However, the home had suffered from a previous, poorly executed renovation that left the rear two-story sunroom, porch, and office unsafe and in disrepair. Our mission was clear: tear down the faulty addition and rebuild it from the ground up to ensure structural integrity.

Despite these challenges, the house’s original trim, windows, and doors retained an indelible charm that we were determined to preserve. Throughout the renovation, we meticulously salvaged and restored these unique elements, including reusing wainscoting panels from the initial construction, ensuring that the home’s historic character remained intact.

Design and Layout

Creating a seamless flow on the first floor was a priority. We focused on establishing an easy transition from the kitchen through the butler’s pantry into the dining room. This design not only enhances movement between spaces but also creates a convenient layout for entertaining.

On the second floor, we combined three rooms to create a spacious walkthrough primary suite, offering a luxurious retreat for the homeowner. The third floor received a complete refresh, bringing the bed and bathroom up to current energy codes. We also created a new playroom with a clear view of the National Cathedral across the street, providing a beautiful and functional space for the boys.

Style and Finish

The kitchen is undoubtedly the highlight of this renovation. Featuring a custom arched plaster hood overlaid on a polished Caesarstone backsplash, white inset cabinetry, and a large island that seats four, the kitchen is both elegant and functional. The combination of soft and bright whites responds brilliantly to the natural light streaming in from the abundant windows. The alignment of these windows allows for several vantage points on the first floor from which one can see from one end of the house to the other, creating a sense of openness and continuity.

To enhance the home’s bespoke appearance and functionality, we meticulously planned the placement of specific lighting fixtures and artworks throughout the kitchen and other areas of the house. This attention to detail ensures that the renovated home not only retains its historic charm but also meets the modern needs of the family of three.
