Project Overview

While we typically work within the DC metropolitan area, this project offered an exciting opportunity to bring our expertise to the picturesque coastal town of Vinalhaven, Maine. Our clients, both Washington, DC-based attorneys, envisioned a spacious kitchen addition for their summer retreat. After collaborating on their DC kitchen renovation, we were thrilled to tackle a new space and work on this addition. We crafted a design that fully embraces Maine’s natural beauty, making this addition a seamless extension of the surrounding environment.

Design and Layout

The layout was carefully designed to prioritize views of the nearby island, particularly from the kitchen sink and prep areas. To maintain an open, airy feel, storage is concentrated in the base cabinetry and the spacious kitchen island, preserving the upper walls for full-height windows. This thoughtful approach allows for uninterrupted sightlines and a connection to the coastal landscape that spans the entire room. Symmetrical tall windows anchor each end of the kitchen and dining area, adding balance and inviting the natural scenery indoors.

Style and Finish

Blending traditional elements with contemporary touches, the finishes in this addition reflect the clients’ appreciation for classic coastal style. Custom inset cabinetry in crisp white and warm white oak introduces natural tones, while granite countertops and a tumbled Carrara marble backsplash bring texture and subtle elegance. Limestone floors and vaulted ceilings amplify the brightness, creating an open, welcoming atmosphere. This coastal kitchen addition is a retreat that meets the clients’ vision of a sanctuary connected to its stunning surroundings.
