Contemporary Bedroom + Bathroom in Alexandria, Virginia
Project Overview
For this bathroom renovation, our clients wanted to expand their small and dated main bath, reclaiming lost space from an unused walk-in closet, and remodel an additional hall bathroom on the second floor in a modern style. In the main bedroom, we helped with the symmetry and flow of the space by adding another window, so the bed would fit neatly, butting up to the exterior wall.
Design + Layout
In the primary bath, removing the existing walk-in closet gave us room for floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry, for linens and clothes. The shape of the room led us to tuck a large wet room towards the back of the bathroom, in which we installed a large soaking tub, rain shower head and wall mounted shower arm, and a steam vent for a truly luxurious experience. The hall bath we kept simple with an oblong pentagonal shower tucked in the corner, with two half-walls clad in the same shower tile to lend more stability and structure to the corner. In the primary bedroom, we mirrored the existing window to create symmetrical openings on the wall, in order to help the styling of the room.
Style + Finishes
Our clients wanted a bold patterned tile to be the highlight of their bathroom–so from that tile we took the rest of our design cues. Clean sharp lines, black cabinetry, and soft white countertops paired with brass fixtures completed the look. Inside the wet room, a window allows plenty of natural light, falling on a mosaic black and white floor tile and bright glazed ceramic wall tile. The black and white theme continues in the hall bath, with the same shower tile, matte black fixtures, and a muted floating vanity cabinet. We were able to frame a simple but striking accent wall in the main bedroom, painted a handsome blue, with elegant wainscot strips adding a pleasing depth and texture.
