Davenport Do-Over in Tenleytown, Washington, DC
Project Overview
Our clients were a family of four near American University who needed their house to function more practically for their everyday needs. We added a two-story renovation on their 1937 colonial, and gutted the main home, allowing us to build a bonus room basement, brand-new primary suite upstairs and kitchen downstairs, and backyard hardscaping and landscaping.
Design + Layout
We often need to walk the line between changing a house’s original design beyond all recognition, and delivering on our client’s wishes. In the case of an addition like the one we built here, we have the best of both worlds: We can build a beautiful open kitchen and spacious suite without compromising the original home’s architecture. Keeping the original narrow arches on the first floor was a must, and we added another arch from the existing house into the new construction.
Style + Finishes
The homeowners chose a bright and classic palette, with plenty of bright whites and royal blue accents. A patterned wallpaper in the dining room adds dimension and visual interest to the brightly lit room. In the kitchen, a spacious island occupies the center, with the range in the center, and major appliances flanking on either side. A coffered ceiling and wire-frame farmhouse lighting add a distinguished touch to the space.
