Full Home Remodel in Brookland, Washington, DC
Project Overview
We tackled this renovation during the heart of the pandemic. In two phases, we first reconfigured the 2nd floor primary suite to include a more functional bathroom and walk-in closet. Next, we focused on the kitchen. In both the kitchen and living room, we had an opportunity to reclaim unused space from a previous renovation. We reconfigured the entire kitchen, with cabinetry along the entire perimeter, plus a generous island with a breakfast bar. We also added a butler’s pantry and mudroom off the kitchen, adding plenty of extra storage and useful space for our clients’ family.
Design + Layout
In the first phase our primary focus was upstairs, where we borrowed unused space from the main bedroom to build a larger bath and walk-in closet. We also remodeled the bathroom on the hall, and created a laundry room. In the next phase, we reimagined the first floor and basement; we had to move every element of the kitchen, rerunning electric cables, water lines, gas, and sewer drains to fit our new arrangement. At the rear of the house, we added a three-season porch to accommodate more time spent with friends and family outdoors.
Style + Finishes
Our clients chose a calm modern finish for their renovation. Bright whites and exposed structural beams are grounded by sober blue cabinetry accents and flat black hardware and fixtures. The quilted tile backsplash in the kitchen gives the room a soft and warm air, and the numerous windows let in plenty of light. In the primary suite upstairs, the bathroom is finished in a calm greyscale, with more subdued blue accents in the hall bath, echoing the stronger blues of the kitchen island and butler’s pantry downstairs.
