Home Remodel in Hyattsville, Maryland
Project Overview
This project presented a unique challenge for several reasons. The property was a foreclosure that had been neglected for years. Although it had been built relatively recently, the house was a disaster: leaking roofs and plumbing, moldy carpet, and rodents running rampant. In short, nothing existing could be salvaged. Plus, the clients were on a tight timeline and had a firm move-in date.
Design and Layout
The goal of the project was to completely remodel the house on the inside and out. The home is not huge, so the clients wanted an open design that would make every room feel as spacious as possible. We removed a wall separating the kitchen and dining room and installed a peninsula with seating in its place. The kids bath was opened by installing a rain shower in the ceiling, and replacing a partition wall with a custom glass panel. For the master bath, we installed a wall mounted toilet and bumped the footprint out to include a shower bench. We installed an elevated reading nook in one bedroom, and custom closets in the other two as storage space was at a premium. We converted the basement to a playroom, with an adjoining home-office separated by a low wall of custom cabinetry which allows both adults and children to work/play in close proximity. Since the house was poorly lit and had few windows, we cut in windows at the front and back of the house, and installed recessed lighting in the basement, living room and kitchen.
Style and Finishes
We decided to go for a modern design that was both eclectic and warm so as to be inviting to the homeowners’ three young children. Some of the elements that made this a reality are colorful accent tile in the kids bath, a floating teak vanity in the master bath, and contrasting countertops (butcher block and Zodiac) in the kitchen. The beech floor we installed throughout the first and second levels ties everything together nicely.
Construction and Final Product
Because the clients were not living in the home during construction, we had plenty of room to spread out and store materials, as well as off-street parking. These are luxuries when remodeling in the D.C. area! The only unexpected condition was the amount of junk in the crawl space, which completely filled a 30-yard dumpster.
What the Customer Said
“To be honest with you I was not thrilled when we purchased the house. I obviously saw potential but never imagined that the transformation could be as dramatic as it was. Special thanks to Leroy and the design team for balancing my crazy ideas with your creative ideas. Although I got a few proposals from other companies for this project, I will not bother for the next. The only call I’ll make is to Four Brothers.”
