Timeless Rowhouse Remodel in Capitol Hill, Washington, DC
Project Overview
This historic 1890 Capitol Hill rowhouse was fully renovated to become a forever home for a couple expecting their first child. The antiquated layout and structural issues required a remodel that modernized the space while preserving its original charm.
Design + Layout
The remodel focused on expanding the kitchen, adding a powder room on the first floor, and enhancing the primary suite with a new bathroom. We also replaced the unsafe rear balcony with French doors leading to the patio and reframed the kitchen floor to address underlying deficiencies. Structural improvements included tuckpointing the rear facade and reinforcing the roof structure above the primary bedroom. New windows in the rear flood this home with natural light and highlight all the original, historic details.
Style + Finishes
We emphasized retaining the home’s traditional style while integrating modern comforts. Key original elements, such as the front vestibule doors, stained glass skylight, staircase wainscotting, stained glass transoms, and custom plaster crown moldings, were all meticulously restored. The kitchen remodel featured custom inset cabinetry that increased storage space while blending seamlessly with the home’s historic character. Custom hidden doors were included in the dining room, and new interior doors throughout the home were crafted to match the original profiles. The end result is a timeless DC row home that’s a perfect fit for this growing family.
