Renovating a Watergate Condo in Georgetown, Washington, DC

Project Overview
The Watergate’s close proximity to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was a major draw for our clients. As passionate music lovers, they wanted a home that allowed them to entertain before and after performances with ease. They also have a deep appreciation for Art Deco design, but the condo’s original aesthetic felt outdated, and its layout didn’t align with their needs. A key goal of the remodel was to enhance the westward-facing views of the Potomac, which required strategic changes to the floor plan. Condo renovations come with unique constraints—many walls are structural and cannot be moved. However, by carefully removing select partitions in the living area, we were able to create an open and inviting space that seamlessly connects the kitchen and living room while drawing attention to the river views.
Design and Layout
The challenge was to design a high-performance kitchen that maintained a warm, inviting atmosphere for guests—all within the existing footprint. Maximizing function without sacrificing aesthetics, we concealed essential appliances behind custom cabinetry, including a hidden washer and dryer, dishwasher, and a full-size side-by-side fridge and freezer. A built-in spice shelf was also integrated for convenience. The sink was placed out of sight from the main entertaining space, featuring a concealed drying rack tucked beneath floating walnut shelves. Additionally, the condo’s structural limitations required creative solutions. Instead of boxing in the existing support column, pipes, and ductwork with standard bulkheads, we embraced them—wrapping the central pillar with floating bookshelves and incorporating a curved ceiling detail that subtly disguises mechanical elements while mirroring the Watergate’s signature architectural curves.
Style and Finish
The clients’ love for Art Deco heavily influenced the design direction. Custom, narrow-framed cabinetry in a deep blue defines the kitchen, complemented by a striking black reeded peninsula with a brass toe kick—custom-built by Four Brothers to echo the smooth ceiling detail above. A diamond-patterned marble tile backsplash with gold accents pays homage to classic Art Deco aesthetics, while floating walnut shelves provide both storage and warmth. In the bathroom, a mid-century-inspired vanity aligns with the period furnishings in the primary bedroom, while angular lighting fixtures add a contemporary edge throughout the space.
