Timeless Rowhouse Remodel in Capitol Hill, Washington, DC
Project Overview
This 1890 Capitol Hill rowhouse was completely transformed to create a forever home for a couple welcoming their first child. With an outdated layout and structural issues, the home needed extensive renovations to blend modern functionality with its historic charm. Our team tackled several key challenges including expanding the living spaces and restoring original architectural features. The result is a timeless home that honors its past while providing a bright and welcoming environment for the growing family.
Design and Layout
This remodel focused on improving flow and usability throughout the home. On the first floor, the kitchen was expanded to become a more open space with new French doors that replaced the once deteriorating balcony. A powder room was added for convenience, and structural issues with the kitchen floor were resolved to ensure long-term stability. Upstairs, the primary suite was reimagined as a serene retreat, complete with a new bathroom. Additionally, new rear windows flood the interior with natural light, accentuating the home’s historic features.
Style and Finish
Again, preserving the home’s history was central to the design. Key original details, including the stained glass skylight, front vestibule doors, wainscotting along staircase, and intricate plaster crown moldings, were meticulously restored to their former glory. The kitchen renovation includes custom inset cabinetry that adds storage while blending seamlessly with the home’s traditional style. Throughout the house, historically inspired doors were used as well as integrated, hidden doors in the cabinetry. This renovation strikes a perfect balance between historic preservation and modern living, creating a home that’s as functional as it is charming.
